This statue of Dionysus, depicted in the Sardanapalus style and mounted on a contemporary pedestal, originates from a Greek original created around 400 BC. This Roman replica was crafted during the middle of the 2nd century AD. The full figure representation is known as The Dionysus Sardanapalus. It is an unusual Hellenistic-Roman Neo-Attic sculpture style depicting the god Dionysus, mistakenly named after Sardanapalus, the last king of Assyria. The mistake was confirmed in a 17th-century restoration at the Vatican Museums, which added an inscription on a band across its chest with the name ϹΑΡΔΑΝΑΠΑΛΛΟϹ (Sardanapalus). This misidentification has no basis in fact and is not related to this legendary king.
