Dionysus, the revered deity of wine, theatre, and unbridled pleasure, is depicted in this iconic grouping embracing a satyr - a mythical woodland being whose distinctive features combine the ruggedness of a goat with the agility of a man. Satyrs held positions of prominence within Dionysus' entourage, known as the Thiasus, alongside nymphs and later maenads, the devoted female followers of the god.
