Dionysus and Pan accompany a majestic panther, crafted by Roman artisans in 2nd century A.D., an exquisite marble replica of a Greek original now housed at the Nye Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Denmark. In ancient Greece, Dionysus was revered as the god of wine production, winemaking, and revelry, often associated with ritual frenzy, fertility, theater, and ecstatic worship. The Romans knew him as Bacchus, adopting his name for their own pantheon. Wine played a pivotal role in Greek culture, where the cult of Dionysus centered around unbridled consumption. Pan, the god of untamed wilderness, shepherds, and flocks, embodied the essence of rustic nature and the music that accompanied it. His name originated from the ancient Greek word paein, meaning "to graze," giving rise to the modern term "panic." Pan's appearance features the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, similar to those of a faun or satyr.
