Diomedes

A legendary Greek hero emerges in the form of Diomedes, son of Tydeus and Deipyle, who boasts a special bond with Athena, being her favourite and thus under her watchful protection. Diomedes takes part in the expedition led by Epigone against Thebes, while later succeeding his grandfather Adrastus as king of Argos and joining the Greeks in their quest to conquer Troy. On the Greek side, two mighty champions stand out: Ajax and Diomedes, who fight valiantly and bring down many a Trojan warrior with their unyielding prowess. Diomedes even comes close to slaying Prince Aeneas, but the goddess Aphrodite swoops in to save him, lifting him in her arms. However, Diomedes leaps forward, wounding Aphrodite's hand, causing her to cry out as she releases Aeneas and weeps in pain, making her way to Olympus. Though Aphrodite fails to keep her son safe that day, Aeneas survives unscathed due to Apollo's timely intervention, who envelops him in a cloud and carries him to the sacred Pergamos in Troy, where Artemis heals his wound.
