My company Enzan No Metsuke specializes in identifying innovative devices and strategies based on neuroscience and human behavior for application to healthcare and defense, and improving the efficiency and ergonomics of daily use objects in these fields. To address the COVID-19 crisis and face mask shortages, I designed DinoSon to adapt adult-sized disposable face masks with ear loops for children. The design is kid-friendly (Diplodocus or Loch Ness monster depending on your preference). DinoSon features four distinct functions: 1. Adapt adult-size 3-ply disposable face masks to fit children's faces. First, tie two knots at the base of each ear loop, then hook DinoSon onto its tail side and secure it behind the child's neck. This design reduces discomfort and prevents removal, allowing the mask to remain in place for longer periods. 2. Prevent wearing face masks on ears as this can cause skin lesions and trauma for doctors and nurses who wear masks all day. 3. Tighten disposable 3-ply and KN95 face masks to enhance their effectiveness. Chinese-made masks with non-woven melt-blown media layers often have weak ear loops, leading to air leakage. DinoSon limits mask movement during head motion and tightens the nasal area as pressure is directed downward toward the neck, visible through reduced fogging on glasses. 4. When not in use, masks can be easily misplaced or contaminated. DinoSon's neck shape allows users to hook their mask onto a shirt button or directly onto their collar, preventing loss.
