What does your name mean? Your name means "two-measured tooth." When and who discovered it? The first studies made on fossils now classified as Dimetrodon were conducted by the American paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope in the 1870s. How big was it and what did it look like? Dimetrodon wasn't a dinosaur, it belongs to the group of mammal-like reptiles, ancestors of true mammals. The largest Dimetrodon found (of the species Grandis) measured over three meters long. It had a body weight between 25 and 250 kilograms. How long ago did it live? It existed during the Lower Permian period around 299 to 270 million years ago. What did it eat? Dimetrodon was carnivorous, it was a superpredator. In addition, its enormous incisors and powerful jaw indicate that it could hunt animals of its own size. Possibly other pelicosaurians. It also ate fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
