Ready for AR/VR and game with animation. Dilophosaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaurs that roamed North America during the Early Jurassic period, approximately 193 million years ago. In 1940, three skeletons were uncovered in northern Arizona, and two well-preserved specimens were collected in 1942. The most complete specimen was designated as the holotype for a new species within the genus Megalosaurus, named M. wetherilli by Samuel P. Welles in 1954. Two years later, Welles discovered another larger skeleton belonging to the same species. Recognizing distinctive crests on its skull, he reclassified the species into the new genus Dilophosaurus in 1970 as Dilophosaurus wetherilli. The name Dilophosaurus translates to two-crested lizard, and the species is named after John Wetherill, a respected Navajo councilor. Additional specimens have been found since then, including an infant skeleton. Footprints attributed to the animal also include resting traces. Another species, Dilophosaurus sinensis from China, was identified in 1993 but later reassigned to the genus Sinosaurus.
