Dilophosaurus stands out as one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs in the Early Jurassic Period. Its name comes from the two thin crests on top of its head, which were likely used to attract mates during courtship displays - it's highly unlikely that it had a frill like some movies suggest. Dilophosaurus fossils have been discovered in the United States. As a more primitive predator, Dilophosaurus didn't possess forward-facing eyes for stereo vision, but it may have relied heavily on scent when hunting. Its long, slender teeth and strong front arms would have allowed it to effectively grab its prey. It was incredibly fast - likely reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. Footprints attributed to Dilophosaurus often appear in groups, indicating that it may have hunted in small packs. Despite being classified as a member of a different group of theropods, Dilophosaurus shares many physical characteristics with Coelophysis, although their overall body configuration is similar.
