I was beyond frustrated with my scanner……mmmm….yes, it wasn't scanning quite up to par. So, I decided to tinker with it for a while, starting with the laser adjustments, one laser had strayed far from its mark, stuck at 60 degrees when it should be blazing at 90, and fixing it took an eternity – almost a whole week spent tweaking, and you'd think YouTube or online resources would offer some help, but unfortunately not. It's mind-boggling that the Makerbot 'A' team aren't stepping up to support their products; other machines have set the bar higher by far. Nevertheless, when no one listened, I rolled up my sleeves and took charge: two strips of masking tape went down, one in front and one at the back of the turn table, marking with a pen exactly where those lasers intersected – crucial for precision work. To perfect it all, a large steel roofing square rested against the wall and the turntable, giving me precise calibration with an extra nudge for laser spot-on placement, which I did carefully by hand after taking off the rubber padding to adjust everything in line and wriggling the laser case itself as part of fine-tuning with its corresponding screw – all requiring adjustments from one side to another with deliberate movements. The improvement is astronomical – my scanner performs 10 times better now compared to when I got it brand new, and one happy addition has been a 3D scan made out of an old statue that caught my eye while shopping for deals at the charity shop down the road. As I'd discovered first hand "If you mess with lasers without having any knowledge whatsoever of how they function" get ready to lose your grip as adjusting those takes a good, loooong time; better to just know where and what you're dealing with before getting in the mix of things because fixing mistakes only gets tougher once more steps need fixing afterwards. Unless I had too break all windows nearby along side increaseing levels in the work place that caused such problems!
