My last project was to create a sine wave from picture as a object and to print with the 3dPrinter. I learned it by doing. I was so happy with its result, for my youtube-buddy-follower - later my view goes to my dificult shaped Digital Clamp Meter you can measure current with it - in german we call it Zangenamperemeter. Its shape with slanted lines, roundings very difficult to bring it plan down to a sketch. So I took a photo, with a measure paper with millimeters (we need it to scale or calibrate the photo an the sketch). And works - it works too. after some corrections, it was ready to print out with the 3d-printer in the lowest quality. Never before I would think to spend my time - you would think too - but I'm in retirement.
