Digicomp I
thingiverse
Testing continues on the 3D printed recreation of the Digicomp I, a three-bit computer from the 60's. This is a work in progress and relies heavily on information provided by the members of the FriendsOfDigiComp Yahoo group, including drawings, photos and manuals. Special thanks to ESR for their genius in creating this product. The purpose of this project is to provide a source for those who want to print their own Digicomp I or replace missing parts for a vintage device. This process will be tested over the next couple of months. A DC I was finally obtained from Ebay and the process of updating parts has begun. The parts are very close to matching the original, but some tweaking is still needed. Updates will be posted when complete. OTHER SOURCES YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT: For those looking for a fully functional recreation of the DC I that does not require printing, MindsOnToys offers a card-stock version: http://www.mindsontoys.com/kits.htm A beautiful wood recreation of the DC II is available from EvilMadScientist: http://shop.evilmadscientist.com/productsmenu/tinykitlist/375-dcii A DC II app for IOS devices can also be found: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/virtual-dc-ii/id668402874?ls=1&mt=8 BUILD LIST: Quantity - 1 White Full Base or Modified Base Quantity - 2 Red End-piece Quantity - 1 Red Gusset Quantity - 1 Red Readout Quantity - 3 Red Flipflop Quantity - 1 Heavy Needle Nose Pliers Quantity - 1 Lineman's Pliers Quantity - 1 Mini Bolt Cutter BUILD TIPS: 1. Overprint and schmutz must be carefully removed, especially where parts come into contact with each other. 2. The rod shape has little tolerance and may not move smoothly if the horizontal sections are too long. 3. Trim off excess wire at the top of the rods to prevent catching on sliders. 4. Carefully ream out the crank hole in the base for a tight fit. Progress Notes: UPDATE 5/20/16 Continuing work on documentation: http://www.someoldguycoding.com/projects/digicomp-i/. The device has passed the checkout problem from the original manual after some tweaking. Once documentation is complete, parts will be shipped to a tester for comparison with a vintage DC I. If issues arise, updates will be made. Thanks for your time and interest, Mark
