Cerro de los Batallones (Madrid) is the most complete record in the world for understanding upper Miocene carnivors, according to Jorge Morales, director of paleontological excavations and commissioner of the exhibition "Sabers and Mastodons: a Journey to the Miocene." Nine million years ago, the territory where today's Community of Madrid stands was inhabited by countless extinct animals. A large predator stood out among them: the saber-toothed tiger. Many species that lived during the Miocene can be studied thanks to findings in Cerro de los Batallones paleontological sites. These sites, discovered a quarter century ago in Torrejon de Velasco during mining explorations, house exceptionally well-preserved paleontological remains. The exhibition proposes a journey back in time to learn about the fauna that once inhabited that area.
