Collection of dental pieces from Hipparion (Sierra Mágina, Jaén; Pleistocene age, approximately 1-1.8 million years). The Hipparion was an extinct horse genus with a small size, with a height that did not exceed 1.4 meters. It was quite abundant between the middle Miocene and Pleistocene, and its remains have been found in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. Unlike modern horses, which only have two toes, Hipparion had three toes. In Jaén, numerous remains associated with cavity fillings have been found. Artistic recreation of a Hipparion specimen (Wikipedia, Hipparion3.jpg; H.Harder, circa 1920).
