Didelphis Virginiana

myminifactory

The Virginia opossum, a large didelphid, is the only marsupial native to North America. Adult males of Didelphis virginiana weigh an average of 2.8 kg and females weigh an average of 1.9 kg (McManus, 1974). D. virginiana adults are recognized by their long snout, prehensile tail covered in scales, short black ears, thick guard hair, and opposable, clawless halux on the foot. The coloration of the pelage varies across its geographic range (Gardner, 1973). Dr. Ted Macrini's 2005 online article, "Didelphis virginiana", is available through Digital Morphology.
