In ancient Roman mythology, Diana emerged as the mighty goddess of the hunt, the moon, and nature, commanding respect for her association with wild animals and woodland. With the power to converse with and control wildlife, she was revered by all who knew her. Eventually, she was linked to the Greek deity Artemis, although her origins were distinctly rooted in Italy. Diana held a sacred place in ancient Roman religion and remains an integral figure in Roman Neopaganism and Stregheria. As the virgin goddess of childbirth and women, she was deeply respected for her wisdom and compassion. Alongside Minerva and Vesta, Diana formed a trio of maiden goddesses who swore to remain eternally chaste. The majestic oak groves were sacred to her, as were the gentle deer that roamed beneath their branches. According to Roman mythology, Diana was born on the island of Delos alongside her twin brother Apollo, with Jupiter and Latona proudly claiming her as their own daughter. Alongside Egeria, the water nymph who served as her loyal servant and midwife, and Virbius, the woodland god who shared her sacred domain, Diana formed a powerful triad that would forever shape the world of Roman mythology.
