In ancient Roman mythology, Diana was a goddess of great renown, revered for her powers over the hunt, the moon, and childbirth. Associated with wild animals and woodland, she possessed the extraordinary ability to converse with and commandeer the actions of beasts. Equated with the Greek deity Artemis, yet independently rooted in Italian heritage, Diana's worship was deeply ingrained in the ancient Roman faith. In modern times, her reverence has been revived within Roman Neopaganism and Stregheria, while Dianic Wicca, a distinctly feminist practice, bears her name. As a virgin goddess of childbirth and women, Diana stood as one of three maiden deities who pledged to remain unwed: Diana, Minerva, and Vesta. Diana's sacred groves, particularly those comprising oak trees, were held in utmost reverence. According to mythological accounts, similar to the Greek mythology surrounding Artemis, Diana was born alongside her twin brother Apollo on the island of Delos, the offspring of Jupiter and Latona. Alongside Egeria, the water nymph who served as both her assistant and midwife, and Virbius, the woodland deity, Diana formed a triumvirate of Roman deities.
