This sister sculpture to Narcissus is available for download and print here: Diana, goddess of nature and hunting, twin sister of Apollo, stands proudly with a greyhound by her side. Her flowing mantle flows behind her as she wears a quiver on her back. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a young man so captivated by his own reflection in a fountain that he fell into ecstasy. Overwhelmed by the impossibility of grasping this alter ego, he languished and died. Grupello's sculpture represents the moment of sublime admiration. The young man carries a quiver on his back, with his right foot resting on a dolphin symbolizing water. His left hand conveys self-love while tension in his right hand expresses horror at being anchored to the spot. Diana can be dated to around 1680-85 based on her likeness to a Diana statue in Versailles created by Coysevox in 1679. Narcissus, meanwhile, shares similarities with Charles Le Brun's preparatory designs for Versailles. The French influence on both statues is evident, but Grupello successfully combined classical French elements with Flemish baroque naturalism. In 1780, the two statues were moved to the newly designed Brussels city park and later entrusted to a museum.
