Diana and Actaeon
myminifactory
The legend of Diana and Actaeon emerges within Ovid's Metamorphoses, where a young hunter named Actaeon suffers an unfortunate fate. As a grandson of Cadmus, Actaeon encounters chaste Artemis, also known as Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, who is bathing naked in a spring with her escort of nymphs. Unbeknownst to him, Actaeon stumbles upon the scene, prompting the nymphs to scream in surprise and attempt to cover Diana. In a fit of enraged embarrassment, Diana splashes water on Actaeon, transforming him into a deer with a spotted hide and long antlers, stripping him of his ability to speak. Fleeing in terror, he is soon tracked down by his own hounds, who fail to recognize their master.
