Devious Pythagorean Cup
thingiverse
The Pythagorean cup is an ingenious drinking vessel that drains its contents via siphon action if overfilled. The original design, however, has a central stem for the siphon tube, which gives away the surprise element. Thankfully, modern 3D printing technology allows us to create a more devious version, concealing the siphon within the walls of the cup. This new design features a siphon tube that travels over 300 degrees of the rim's circumference, ensuring that a moderately filled cup will not drain when tilted. The object has been tested and is fully functional, making it an excellent brainteaser or science demonstration for students. It was originally printed on a Makerbot Replicator 2 using True Yellow PLA, with specific printing settings detailed in the instructions. The STL file can be scaled up or down, and the original Solidworks file is also provided for anyone who wishes to improve upon the design.
