The laying of the cornerstone of the old building of the medicine faculty, now ICBS, took place in 1913. The building was designed by architect Theodore Wiedersphan and the work was carried out by Rudolph Ahrons (beginning) / Augusto Sartori (end). Its style is characterized as neoclassical. Its external ornaments are of the authorship of Italian sculptor Frederico Pellarin. The building underwent extensive renovations in 1937, 1952 and 1955 and has a built area of 9,285m2. It currently houses the headquarters of the Institute of Basic Health Sciences responsible for the biomedicine course and six more postgraduate programs.
