Kohunlich stands as a massive archaeological site of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization, nestled deep within the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. This remarkable site boasts an Early Classic pyramid known as the Temple of the Masks, whose central stairway is elegantly flanked by enormous humanized stucco masks. Built around 500 A.D., the Temple of the Masks is one of Kohunlich's oldest structures and a testament to the ingenuity of its ancient creators. Remarkably, the temple was eventually covered over, which safeguarded the masks and contributed significantly to their impeccable state of preservation today. Interestingly, the Spanish name for this site does not originate from Mayan roots but rather from the English term "Cohune Ridge," where cohune palm trees once thrived in abundance.
