Detail of the Palace of Quetzalpapalotl

The Palace of Quetzalpapalotl stands out as the most exceptional palatial structure in all of Teotihuacan, boasting large, vibrant tablero-style lintels and intricately carved pillars adorned with obsidian and mica that scream luxury and authority. Clearly, its designers aimed to create a masterpiece that would command respect and showcase their wealth when it was finally completed. This magnificent Palace is strategically arranged around a spacious square courtyard, with four beautifully porticoed vestibules leading directly into rooms on all sides – every side, that is, except for the eastern one, which seamlessly integrates with the pyramidal temple base situated in the south-western corner of the Plaza of the Moon. The palace takes its name from the striking images discovered on the pillars back in 1962, which were initially thought to be those of Quetzalpapalotl – the majestic "feathered-butterfly".
