Built and launched between 1943 and 1944, the Buckley Class Destroyer Escorts played a significant role in the war effort during World War II. Compared to larger fleet destroyer classes, these ships were smaller, slower and had less range, but they required less manpower, cost less money, were more maneuverable, and easier to deploy. A total of over 150 ships from this class served with distinction in the US Navy or as British Captain Class Frigates. Equipped with three 3 inch artillery pieces, a quad 40 mm anti aircraft gun, three standard M14 torpedo launch tubes, and up to eight 20 mm cannons, these vessels packed a powerful punch. Additionally, they carried four key defensive systems: multiple k-gun launchers for depth charges, after racks holding two depth charges each, single launcher mousetraps for special ordnance deployment, and three M14 torpedoes at their disposal. A significant asset in the anti-submarine warfare was its state-of-the-art sonar and underwater search equipment. These advanced capabilities ensured a formidable fighting presence on the seas. The iconic Buckley Class Destroyer escort made an appearance in the memorable movie "The Enemy Below".
