Buckley Class Destroyer Escorts were a fleet of ships built and launched between 1943 and 1944 to bolster the war effort during World War II. These ships were smaller and slower than the fleet destroyer classes, with less range, but they were simpler, cheaper, quicker to man, and more agile. Over 150 of these vessels were constructed and saw action in the US Navy or British Navy as Captain Class Frigates. Equipped with three 3-inch artillery pieces, a single quad 40mm anti-aircraft gun, three torpedo launch tubes for standard M14 torpedoes, and up to eight 20mm cannons, these ships could also carry M24 mousetrap launchers, two aft racks for roll-off depth charges, and 6-8 K-gun launchers for depth charges. Additionally, they were outfitted with the latest sonar and underwater search gear for anti-submarine warfare. The Buckley Class Destroyer escort made an appearance in the movie “The Enemy Below’. Most of the film was shot on board a Buckley Class ship.
