Built between 1943 and 1944, the Buckley Class Destroyer Escorts were designed to contribute to World War II's war effort. Smaller, slower and with reduced range compared to fleet destroyer classes, they excelled in being quicker to man, less costly and more maneuverable. Over 150 of these vessels entered service within the US Navy or British Navy as Captain Class Frigates. Equipped with three 3-inch artillery pieces, a single quad 40mm anti-aircraft gun, three torpedo launch tubes for standard M14 torpedoes, and up to eight 20mm cannons, these ships carried various armaments. They also featured mousetrap launchers, after racks for roll-off depth charges, k-gun launchers for depth charges, and the latest sonar and underwater search gear for anti-submarine warfare. The Buckley Class Destroyer Escort was prominently featured in the film "The Enemy Below", with most of it filmed on a Buckley-class ship.
