Desktop Wire Organizer

Desktop Wire Organizer

Project Summary: Working or learning from home can be difficult without the proper supplies, stable internet connection, and/or lack of organization. This two-piece design is meant to help hide away and organize the wires from chargers that also doubles as a holder for a container that holds your pens, pencils, etc. This helps you to not only declutter your desktop but prevents wires from getting tangled with one another. The wire organizer (Desk&WireOrganizer1) allows for three wires to run through "tunnels" to the other side (the piece must be lifted up to run the wires underneath) and a fourth wire to run perpendicular to the three in the free space. The top piece (Desk&WireOrganizer2), which holds your container, is placed on top of the wire organizer to allow for easy access to that fourth wire, if necessary. 1. What issues did you come up against? Some issues that came up were how the design would 3D print and figuring out how to run a smoother print. Initially, my design was to have the organizer all in one piece but once utilizing the Section View tool I realized that the design would need a lot of support structures that would be hard to extract which would defeat the purpose of the free space tunnel for the fourth wire to run in. To combat this, I designed the organizer to be broken up into two pieces which can be printed with different orientations to avoid such printing issues.  2. If you could redesign this again what would you change? If I would redesign this, I would have it so the top piece (Desk&WireOrganizer2) can accommodate/house other things that you would find on a desk. For instance, having a built-in phone holder to prop up your phone during calls and meetings. There are various ways to organize a desktop but combining solutions can offer even more effective and useful organization of supplies. Another thought would be to change the shape of the organizer. Instead of being cylindrical, it could be rectangular or even a semi-circle. I used a cylindrical base since I thought having the top as a holder for a container would be useful but other shapes would be more beneficial when designing other tops of the organizer. 3. How would 3D printing help strengthen your design? 3D printing helps strengthen my design because the shape of the wire organizers is not traditional. It is a hollow cylinder with multiple rectangles running inside of it creating unique shapes. With 3D printing, it is a faster, more adaptable method of manufacturing such an organizer. Since this organizer is comprised of two pieces, with 3D printing, the two pieces can be printed at the same time, with the same printer and same filament.
