Update #2: A curious person asked if it's possible to fit a node MCU into the body of this project, but unfortunately, that won't work. However, a Wemos Mini fits perfectly inside, so I've added a tray to hold this ESP8266 board. Update #1: I'm eager to exchange widget app ideas and code with others on this forum. As an international user, I'm familiar with rearranged widgets on my Windows desktop, which is why I prefer having them displayed in real-time on my desk. With an ESP8266 and a 128x64 OLED display, you can build this project for under $5! The ESP fetches information from the internet via WLAN and displays it on the OLED - it's that simple. Here's a tiny, sleek housing I designed for these widgets, inspired by a "BRAUN"-style design, but the finished result looks more like a Star Wars storm trooper helmet to me. Nevertheless, it turned out well. For switching functions, I created two versions: one with push buttons and another with a gesture sensor. Unfortunately, the buttons ruined the design, so I opted for the gesture sensor instead - it works perfectly without compromising the look, but doubles the cost at least. The electronics hosting comes in two versions as well: one with just an OLED display and ESP 8266 (ESP-03), and another with an additional Arduino mini pro (using an ESP-01).
