Desktop Network Socket
youmagine
This is a network socket that can be placed anywhere, eliminating the need to hunt behind or under furniture for a wall or floor outlet. Simply position it wherever desired and plug in a patch cable, and it's ready to use! I got this idea from hotels that feature similar devices on their desks. Someone suggested using velcro, but where's the fun in that? To create this part, you'll need two additional components: a "back-to-back" network coupler and counter-sink screws. The network coupler is a handy gadget with sockets on both sides that can be used to extend network cables. I purchased mine from Amazon for £0.33 (UKP). The second item required is a pair of number 2 screws, which are quite small. You may be able to salvage them from discarded toys or other products if you're in the habit of repurposing items. Alternatively, you can buy them at Modelfixings.co.uk for a low cost. If desired, you can also add some weight to the socket using old screws, fishing weights, ball bearings, or other heavy objects. Print the plate with 0.2mm layers, but I recommend printing the dome in high quality (0.1mm layers). For both parts, a moderate amount of infill is sufficient (15% should be enough). The dome features two hollow compartments on either side and a rectangular slot for the network coupler. Place some weights in the side compartments and secure them with glue if necessary. Next, fit the plate over the top, ensuring it clicks into place due to its four catches around the sides. Then, screw in the two screws. If you haven't already, plug in a patch cable, and your socket is ready for use on your desk!
