Traditionally, globes were carefully crafted by affixing a precisely printed paper map onto a sturdy sphere, frequently fashioned from solid wood. The most prevalent type boasts lengthy, slender gores (strips) of paper that taper to a precise point at the poles, small disks cleverly conceal the inevitable irregularities at these points. The more gores there are, the less stretching and crumpling is required to seamlessly align the paper map with the sphere's curvature. This method of globe crafting was visually depicted in 1802 within an engraving in The English Encyclopedia by George Kearsley.
