Desktop Aquaponics System (Prototype)

The Desktop Aquaponics System is a key component of my BioLab project, currently underway at Leiden University's Centre for Innovation on Campus the Hague in the Netherlands. The ultimate goal is to launch the BioLab by creating a DIY or DIT desktop Aquaponics system. By combining Aquaculture - essentially fish farming - with Hydroponics, which involves soil-less agriculture typically reliant on petroleum-based nutrient solutions for plants, we can create a more sustainable food production method. We believe that harnessing the waste of fish as fertilizer and nourishment for plants is a game-changer. Our vision is to tap into the vast untapped potential of this approach and drive innovation in this field. The maker community presents an ideal environment for novel ideas and innovations to flourish, which is why we're sharing our designs and results. Envisioning a future where refrigerators or kitchen systems can grow their own food may seem like science fiction, but with the Desktop Aquaponics system as a starting point, we could see significant interest in this subject emerge.
