Desktop Aquaponics & Airfiltration System

The Desktop Aquaponics System is part of the iForesee (i4C) project at the Centre for Innovation (C4i), Leiden University's Campus in The Hague, Netherlands. This project aims to develop a DIY aquaponics system that promotes social education and awareness of aquaponic practices and techniques. Aquaponics combines aquaculture with hydroponics, utilizing fish waste as fertilizer for plants. By mimicking natural ecosystems, aquaponics can produce food while minimizing environmental impact. Like hydroponics, it offers benefits such as increased crop yields in smaller spaces, but adds the advantage of producing a double yield (fish and plants) in the same floor space when vertically stacked. We believe this method has significant untapped potential and encourages innovation and social awareness in this field. The maker community is an ideal breeding ground for new ideas and innovations, which is why we're sharing our designs and results. After testing our initial prototype, we discovered the value of incorporating an air filtration system into the unit. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal (Feng-shui) but also keeps plants watered (herbs, flowers, etc.) and filters the air from VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). We invite others to build these systems for educational purposes or simply for fun and share their experiences, design improvements, and suggestions with us.
