This mechanism was used in movie cameras and projectors to rapidly advance the film from frame to frame. It was invented in by clock makers in Geneva. As the input wheel turns at constant speed the output wheel moves in intermittent rapid steps between periods of no motion. In this implementation a disk can be attached with graphics to make a simple Zoetrope.
