Desk Organizer 2.0
thingiverse
The main purpose if my design is to provide something helpful to students and adults that will keep their desks, or work area, organized and clean. As a high school student during this pandemic, I know how frustrating it is to look for something like my notebook, pencils, or a spare piece of paper for me to write on. Not just us students but adults tend to misplace something that they might need in their office, just like we need pencils and paper for our classes. Therefore my Desk Organizer 2.0 is a right triangle based designed desk organizer to help people stay organized. It is small enough to fit in any corner of your desk and not take up much of the space. It is designed to have an area for notebook placement, paper placement, a phone holder, two different drawers, and an area for pencils, so you can have important supplies you need within reach. The first issue I faced was how to design my desk organizer. I had a simple and basic design at first but after I 3D modeled it using Autodesk Inventor, I was not proud of what I had made. Since I was familiar with Inventor I knew I could make something better so I decided to follow the engineering design process. I knew I was suppose to 3D model a desk organizer that will be helpful to any student with their virtual learning. Therefore I kept researching desk organizers, even the ones that where the top purchased, until I came up with a design that would benefit students and adults not just with online classes but also after the pandemic is over. The most important features I believed I needed to add was a phone holder so they could join the zoom meeting on their phone but also not to make the desk organizer too big to the point where it would take up the whole desk and not allow space for writing or laptop placement. Taken all of that in consideration, I came up with a right triangle based design but there were more problems on the way. The next problem came up when I was making the drawer area. I knew the drawer would have to be big enough to fit supplies but I didn't want it to take up the whole area. Therefore I made the drawer area about 10 centimeters and decided to cut the height of the drawer in half making two drawers instead of one. Then came the phone holder, I wanted to add a mechanism that would allow people to rotate their phone to the angle they would prefer but not to make it too complicating at the same time. So if you check the desk organizer model you would see what I came up with and I believe it is simple and easy to use. Finally, I came up with the model I was proud of and the one that would allow people to store more than just their pencils and papers. If I was given a chance to redesign my model I wouldn't change much. I already like the right tringle based design I made so I would keep the base as it is. First off I would probably change the phone holder and add more design or some side support so the phone won't fall off. The reason why I made the phone holder as it is because I wanted to allow people the decision of either placing their phone horizontally, vertically, or placing a tablet instead of their phone if they preferred. Next up I would change the pencil area and probably the size of the model. The pencil area just seems like a platform with holes in it so I would add more design and make it more appealing and better. I believe some aspects, or the entire model might be too small so I would change the size and dimensions so it would 3D print perfectly and be the size that people prefer. Lastly, 3D printing would strengthen my design and 3D modeling will help change it to the way people prefer. Using the plastic filament for the model would make it sturdy and coloring it afterwards would even make it look better. Since it is a 3D model, anyone can tweak it and remove or add anything else they would like so they can 3D print it and have a desk organizer that is sturdy and helpful. 3D printing the drawers using a rubber filament might be better. Although using the rubber filament, the drawer might not be that sturdy but it will be a bit flexible and easer to assemble in the model. Obviously since it is a 3D model, anyone with the right software and a 3D printer can easily download the files and modify it to either remove or enlarge certain aspects. Therefore, this design is specifically to help anyone with online work during this pandemic, and also useable after the pandemic is over. So people can have all the important and necessary supplies in a desk organizer that would be in the corner and within reach. Without further ado, I present the Desk Organizer 2.0 which is easily accessible and has enough space for your notebooks, papers, pencils, pens, markers/highlighters, a phone, and even extra storage for further supplies like sticky notes or even paperclips.
