This Desk Buddy proudly holds your school desk supplies! One file stores 2 erasers, 2 pencils, and your choice of 8 crayons/colored pencils/thin markers, while the other file holds 2 erasers, 2 pencils, and 2 highlighters. Designed to be the culmination of a classroom rewards system, it was created to reward reading or math facts, good behavior, or other accomplishments. A small flat area on top of Desk Buddy's head provides kids with a workplane for creating their own "top-do" or hat, allowing them to express their imagination. Print Settings: Printer: FlashForge Creator Pro Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.3 Infill: 8% Notes: 3 Shells The filament used requires a slower print speed for successful printing, and therefore it took almost 5 hours to complete Desk Buddy. Note that Desk Buddy himself does not need support, but the "top-do" design may require it, depending on its grandeur. How I Designed This: I designed this in Tinkercad, adding a small indentation at the top for kids to create their workplane. The indentation is below the level of the head, allowing students' additions to intersect with Desk Buddy's head and making it printable. Project: Personalized Desk Buddy Reward Classroom Desk Buddy Reward: Since these cute desk buddies take 4-5 hours to print, you don't want an entire class printing at once. Use Desk Buddy as a reward for a classroom program, such as reading, book reports, or good behavior. The target audience is elementary school students. Overview & Background: By completing this project, students will learn the basics of creating a workplane in Tinkercad and inserting geometric shapes. Objectives: Students participating in this project will gain basic knowledge of 3D design using Tinkercad. Audiences: We recommend elementary school aged kids, with K-2 students needing an older kid partner for assistance. Grades 3-5 should be able to complete the project independently with minimal guidance. Subjects: Desk Buddy can be a reward for any type of project, such as reading, writing, math, history, or science. The project itself is geared towards 3D design and is more math and basic engineering related. Skills Learned (Standards): Students will learn basic 3D modeling skills using Tinkercad. Lesson/Activity: Open the Tinkercad file at https://tinkercad.com/things/2THZUfNWmY1 or https://tinkercad.com/things/16ScNBXA55N. Watch this video for a quick overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZKWXSIJNjY. Click "w" on the keyboard to create a workplane and select geometric shapes from the right side of the screen. Drag them onto Desk Buddy's head, click to insert, and arrange until you're satisfied. Ensure not to obstruct any holes for erasers or pens/pencils/crayons. Save your file under a unique name. Have the person running the 3D printer prepare it for printing, using supports if necessary for the "top-do". Print, paint if desired, and enjoy watching your students use their Desk Buddy to help them with their work! Duration: Designing the "Top-Do" can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. Printing will take approximately 4 or 5 hours per Desk Buddy. Preparation: Students should have basic computer skills and a Tinkercad account available. References: None required. Rubric & Assessment: See above, as this is a reward project not graded. Handouts & Assets: None required other than the mentioned YouTube video instructional video.
