Desiccant Box for 3D Print Filament Spool (dia. 55mm & 73mm)
thingiverse
This desiccant box is designed to fit inside the core of a 3D filament spool. Two sizes are available. Both sizes use the same body but they use different caps, which fit two diameters: 55m core (e.g., Amazon Basics) and 73mm core (e.g., Sunlu). The cap stays on the body securely, but it also can be glued on using contact cement or super glue for good measure. I fill the box with color changing desiccant; to save money, I also mix in colorless silicon gel that I collect from desiccant packets that come with various merchandises. In a test, I put the filament in a regular food container with the desiccant box installed. The amount of desiccant is enough to keep the humidity at 27% while the outside humidity is 40%. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan on drying the desiccant using a food dehydrator at 60C for 3 to 6 hours when I'm drying my filaments. Considering that a desiccant box of this size is selling for $7 to $8, this design can be a big money saver.
