Derwent River Seastar

Derwent River Seastar

The Derwent River Seastar is a now extinct seastar that used to thrive in five distinct locations throughout Tasmania's Derwent River. This 3D model was recreated from high-resolution CT scan data generously provided by Tim O'Hara and Christy Hipsley of Museums Victoria, who shared the original data under a creative commons license BY4.0. Two STL files are included: one is a direct conversion from TIFF stack to STL, while the other is a repaired version for printing purposes. Although the repaired model still has flipped normals, it prints without issue. If problems arise, users can also access a fixed version using Netfabb's free online service. Original CT data was sourced from O'Hara TD, Mah CL, Hipsley CA, Bribiesca-Contreras G, and Barrett NS in their 2018 publication, "The Derwent River Seastar: re-evaluation of a critically endangered marine invertebrate" in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.
