A derrick is a lifting apparatus typically consisting of at least one guyed mast or self-supporting tower and a hinged boom for articulation. The basic type features three to four lines controlling lateral movement and canting up and down. Lifting is achieved by running a separate line with a hook over the mast, similar to a crane. Derricks may be gin poles or stiff leg derricks depending on their design.
