Deployable Swept Grid Fin
myminifactory
This is an experimental swept grid fin specifically designed for model rockets that have undergone rigorous testing with outstanding results. Extensive testing has proven its effectiveness in real-world scenarios. Initially, this particular fin served as a prototype under the Propulsive Landing Research Project before being replaced by another design currently undergoing evaluation. This innovative fin underwent several grueling tests, successfully passing each one without sustaining significant damage. To further assess its capabilities, we mounted it onto our Decent Research Vehicle (DRV) and dropped the entire setup from 25 ft without parachutes, resulting in only minor damage to small components. Despite initial reservations about its durability, the fins performed admirably, stabilizing the vehicle throughout the descent. The deployment mechanism relies on a nichrome wire connected to the flight computer's pyro output, which heats up and cuts a rubber band that secures the folded fins. Please be aware that these experimental fins are not suitable for high-speed applications due to their design, which causes them to deploy towards the wind at low airspeeds, potentially leading to failure under high speeds.
