The Denver Nuggets are a professional basketball team based in Denver, Colorado, that competes in the National Basketball Association. Originally founded as the Denver Larks in 1967, it was established as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA). Before its first season, however, the team changed its name to Rockets and then again to Nuggets, anticipating an ABA-NBA merger in 1974. As one of the final teams to compete for the ABA Championship title, they lost to the New York Nets in 1976. Following the ABA-NBA merger that same year, the Denver Nuggets joined the NBA and achieved several periods of success, qualifying for the playoffs nine consecutive seasons during the 1980s and ten previous seasons. Despite these accomplishments, the team has not appeared in a championship round since its last year competing in the ABA. The Denver Nuggets play their home games at Pepsi Center, where they share the venue with the Colorado Avalanche from the National Hockey League.
