Democritus
myminifactory
Democritus, a renowned ancient Greek philosopher, is depicted as a jovial figure in early middle age with a distinctive forked beard. Busts of esteemed classical figures were highly prized possessions in the 18th century. Democritus was often juxtaposed alongside the 'weeping philosopher' Heraclitus. A marble bust of Democritus showcases him as a laughing man in young middle age. His head, adorned with a forked beard and loose hair, gazes upwards to the left. A full cloak envelops his right shoulder, caught by a strap that exposes his left shoulder. Gallery location: The Grand Entrance, Room 60 Courtesy of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London
