A year ago, I swapped the filament spool attachment from classic to vertical and above the printer. Why did I make this change? - The spool took up space on my desk. - The spool unwound as it pleased, sometimes causing the rolls to jam. - I have a plexiglass case and wanted everything to fit inside when closed. However, the main reason for making this change was to prevent jamming of the reels on the spool during printing. When the spool was level, filament coils fell off and were easily wedged in place. In addition, the bearings in the middle shaft allowed the entire spool to rotate too freely. One possible solution is to use sponges or rollers as a brake, but this isn't a design solution - it's just prevention. After testing some ideas from colleagues with a central shaft and bearings, I decided to try something different. What did I come up with? You can see the result in the video. The spool is equipped with a brake, and gravity does its job. I experimented with different diameters for the spool to make it rotate freely, but the weight of the spool itself acted as a brake. Thanks to this design, I can safely leave my printer overnight without worrying about finding a plastic mess in the morning... If you're using my previous version, simply print out a new spool and some tips. I designed this project to use the old arms. I used two bearings with dimensions 8x16x5 mm. If necessary, I glued them in place. Check out the YouTube video: https://youtu.be/MpK5eIEGBvc Have a great day!
