The Delta III rocket underwent significant evolution from its predecessor, the Delta II, with a first stage shortened but strengthened and an upper stage expanded to 4 meters in length. The Delta III made three flights between 1998 and 2000, with the initial two launches ending in failure and the final one achieving partial success. The advanced upper stage of the Delta III would eventually become the highly successful Delta IV upper stage.
