I purchased a 12-bay Dell R510 as an economical/DIY DAS solution to enhance storage on my server by utilizing only the backplane and excluding all other internal components. The stock fans were extremely loud and excessive for operating multiple drives, consuming excessive power that prevented fan controllers from functioning effectively. To address this issue, I employed a custom print that enabled the use of standard 60mm fans. I opted for Fractal Design Silent Series R3 60mm fans, which can be easily secured with M3 screws. This modification allowed me to optimize airflow while minimizing noise levels and power consumption. I wanted to share my experience in case anyone else requires a similar solution for their server setup.
