Dell PowerEdge T410 Heatsink Fan Support
thingiverse
I recently picked up an old Dell PowerEdge T410 server for a steal (well, $50) and swapped out the CPUs for a pair of Xeon X5670s, which run hotter than the E5620s that were originally installed.\r\nI got concerned about the extra heat generated by these faster processors, but I didn't want to remove the air tunnel permanently to add larger heatsinks and fans, so I designed this custom solution.\r\nThis design is specifically for 12v 60x60x25mm fans, oriented to pull in extra cool air through the heatsinks. If you mount them to push air through the heatsinks, the shroud/tunnel won't fit back into the server because the fans will interfere with its path.\r\nI powered the fans off the CD/DVD-ROM power lines and connected them using heatshrink tubing to ensure there were no electrical shorts.\r\nInstalling these custom fans brought my CPU temperatures down by 10C at full load.\r\nYou'll need to add zipties to secure it in place on the heatsink, attaching four legs to each clip. The legs should snap into position easily, but if you prefer a more permanent solution, you can glue them in place.
