The shelf is to put webcams or other accessories, and it will allow the monitor to be fully extended vertically, in this case the stand will disappear behind the screen but it's designed to do this rather than be jammed by the curved back of the monitor. This would suit a webcam with a mini tripod when the monitor is at full height. The shelf has 3 holes so you can affix another item onto the shelf, such as a headphone bracket.
