Deliu Petroiu in Timisoara, Romania

Deliu Petroiu was a renowned professor, art critic, and cultural icon. He spent the last years of his career in Timisoara, where he could be heard at numerous exhibitions and book launches. On September 17, 2002, he received the title of Honorary Citizen of Timisoara. Sculptor Aurel Gheorghe Ardelean dedicated two months to crafting a bust that would honor Petroiu's legacy. Over time, Ardelean created more than 50 works, including portraits and busts of notable figures from Timisoara. "My goal was to understand Deliu Petroiu beyond his physical appearance," said Ardelean. "I wanted to capture the essence of his personality in its complexity." Petroiu was a highly respected cultural figure in Timisoara, and his contributions have earned him a well-deserved place in the city's history. Mayor Nicolae Robu praised Petroiu as a consummate professor, critic, writer, and multivalent personality who has influenced generations of students from the Faculty of Letters at the University of West Timisoara. Petroiu was born on August 24, 1922, in Nadlac, Arad County. He graduated from the University of Cluj-Napoca with a degree in Letters and Philosophy, where he studied under Lucian Blaga. Petroiu later co-founded the "Sibiu Literary Circle" in Sibiu before devoting himself to academic pursuits and synthesis for over four decades in Timisoara.
