Over a thousand ornate stelae rise in the Mongolian steppe. These "deer stones" erected by Bronze Age nomads gave birth to the first steppe empire. The Tsatsyn Ereg necropolis, in Arkhangai Province, is being studied by an international team as part of a joint archaeological mission between Monaco and Mongolia (led by Jerome Magail). Under the direction of Monaco's Prehistoric Anthropology Museum and Mongolia's Academy of Sciences, a total of 113 deer stones have been counted on this 200-square-kilometer site.
