Nearly a thousand ornate steles rise in the Mongolian steppe. These "deer stones" erected by Bronze Age nomads birthed the first steppe empire. The Tsatsyn Ereg necropolis, in Arkhangai Province, is studied by an international team as part of a joint archaeological mission between Monaco and Mongolia (led by Jerome Magail). Directed by Monaco's Prehistoric Anthropology Museum and Mongolia's Academy of Sciences, 113 deer stones have been cataloged on this 200 square kilometer site.
