Over a thousand ornate stelae rise in the Mongolian steppe. These "deer stones" erected by Bronze Age nomads gave birth to the first steppes empire. The Tsatsyn Ereg necropolis, located in Mongolia's Arkhangai Province, is being studied by an international team as part of a joint archaeological mission between Monaco and Mongolia (led by Jerome Magail). Under the direction of Monaco's Prehistoric Anthropology Museum and Mongolia's Academy of Sciences, 113 deer stones have been cataloged on this 200-square-kilometer site.
