Decebalus ruled Dacia from 87 to 106 AD. He is well-known for waging three wars against the Roman Empire under two emperors, with varying degrees of success. Decebalus initially raided across the Danube and defeated a Roman invasion during the reign of Emperor Domitian, securing a period of independence that allowed him to consolidate his rule. When Trajan came to power, he launched an invasion of Dacia to weaken its threat to Roman border territory. Decebalus was ultimately defeated but managed to remain in power as a client king, continuing to assert his independence which led to a final and crushing Roman invasion in 105 AD. In 106 AD, Trajan reduced the Dacian capital Sarmizegetusa and absorbed Dacia into the Empire. Decebalus took his own life to avoid capture. Since the mid-19th century, Decebalus has been portrayed as a national hero in Romania, the modern successor to ancient Dacia. Several monuments depict him.
